Canadian dad, husband, and creator of Simply in the Black. My wife and I grew up in low income immigrant families. No inheritances, no trust funds, no free childcare. We’re the everyday strivers you meet in the book The Next Millionaire Next Door, packing leftovers, brewing our daily coffee, and squeezing in side hustle hours after the kids are asleep because Toronto daycare can cost more than rent. When we first started out, our mortgage was the only debt we carried, and today even that is gone. We’re completely debt-free. Paying cash for everything else became our family rule allowing us to solidly stay in the black.
